I found a copy of this book, quite by accident, in the public library at Spartenburg, South Carolina. It was crudely typewritten, and I transcribed the pages to what you see below. I tried to keep it "true" to the original text, ie. Misspelled names, places names, etc., were kept that way. - - Eddie Mikell
"In as, much as some have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of these things which are most surely believed among us, even as they are delivered unto us from the beginning by the recorded Wills of The Mikells, and other infallible proofs. It seemed good to me also to write unto you of succeeding generations that thou mightest know the certainly of these things wherein thou hast been instructed" Then, when the Present becomes the Past, and these fast mouldering Wills become dust and ashes, the question will arise: And who are you, and how, and where have you got your Gospel? My answer to the first query is, that I bear the surname of my mother and father, was born in the old Townsend Homestead, Bleak Hall, Edisto Island, So. Ca, November 12, 1840. My mother was Miss Amirintha Jenkins Townsend, who was the daughter of Daniel Townsend, who was the son of Andrew Townsend, whose lineage goes back to Sir Ladevie de Townsend, in the reign of William the Conquero. My father was Issac Jenkins Mikell, see Generation 6. I was baptized, as an infant in the Edisto Island Presbyterian Church, March 28, 1841. Become a communicant March 3, 1867. Was installed the first Deacon of said church, April 6, 1873 an Elder, December8, 1878. Have been President of the Corporation of the Edisto Island Presbyterian Church fo the past twenty-one years. I was the first student to leave the University of Virginia to take up arms in support of what we believed to be our rights under the Constitution of the U.S. Was made prisoner of war April 8, 1863, see "Rebellion Record", Washington, D.C. Raised and became Capt. Of The Edisto Mounted Riflemen, see Adj. Gen. of S.C. Report, 1879-80. On March 8, 1866, I persuaded a young lady to take her grandmother's full maiden name by becoming my wife, see Record. I am now (1910) in my 70th year, in full health, on the old tramping ground of my forefathers. Having answered the first query, I shall answer the second by saying That the first of historical part of the record, was written by Lient. T. Waring Mikell, see Genealogy, 7th Gen. The Genealogical part of it is taken from the Wills of the Mikells in the probate office, many of which are fast disintegrating, from age; also from church parish registers and tombstones; when found, using only facts and rejecting everything that is legendary, that is not established on facts. The researches were made by the indomitable uncompromising searcher after truth, and efficient editor of the The South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Miss Mabel L. Webber, to whom I feel greatly indebted. Then the whole was referred to Washington A. Clark, Esq, see Record, to be examined legally and to reject all that a Court of Law on evidence could throw out. Those belonging to the different generations have the number of these generations over their names, and the letter represents their family in that generation. Females descending from Ephraim Mikell, of 2nd generation, Capt. In the Expedition, St. Augustine, d. 1743, are eligible to become Colonial Dames. Ephraim Mikell of the 4th generation, b. 1741, d. 1809 (son of John Mikell, b. 1718, d. 1765), was Justice of the Peace, 1774-75. His descendants are entitled to be Sons and Daughters of The American Revolution. May we all of each generation be worthy Sons and Daughters of our worthy Sires. TOWNSEND MIKELL
Chapter One of THE MIKELL FAMILY
"Not long after this period (1682) Lord Cardross, a nobleman from the north of England, came over to Carolina, bringing with him a Colony of North Britons, who were chiefly Baptists, and settled at Port Royal Island. But the neighboring Indians and more particularly he Spainish settlement at St. Angustine proving hostile, soon obliged them to remove to a place more secure and before 1686 we find them settled at the mouth of the Edisto River (Hewit, Vol. 1, 89 and see also appendix to Gov. Archdale's description of the Colony, p. 4). The Baptist part of this Colony among whose names, Morgan Edwards, has preserved those of William Trie (Pastor), Thomas Grimball, Providence Grimball, Ephriam Mikell, Joseph Sealey, Joseph Parmenter, Issac Parmenter, Thomas Parmenter and William Tilly attached themselves to Mr. Sereven's church still worshiping at Somerton. Page 19 The Baptists and their descendants who had settled on Edisto, still members of the Charleston Church had become considerable increased through the labors of Mr. Trie, Mr. Screven and his successors; and before 1722 had joined with other inhabitants of the island is building a meeting house for their common use. About the same time or a little before, Mr. William Tilly, one of the brethen a native of Salesbury, Eng, appearing to be endowed with appropriate gifts and graces, was called to the ministry by the Charleston Church, and after a suitable probation was ordained in Charleston. His residence being on Edisto, his labors were chiefly bestowed there and much to the satisfaction of Christians. But in 1722 the Baptists were ejected from the common meeting house to which the Rev. Mr. Archibald Stobo and those who seted with him, laid exclusive claim. They were therefore compelled to worship in private until 1726, when they built a meeting house for themselves (it was standing in 1772 on a lot of two acres, the gift of Mr. Ephraim Mikell, who was one of the members and a pious excellent man. (Humphrey's, p. 108). The member there, who were then a considerable number soon set about providing permanently for the support of the Baptist preaching on the Island. They purchased of Matthew Crees a tract of land for a glebe, adjoining the two acres given by Mr. Ephraim Mikell for the sum of l340. (The trustees then being Charles Idingsell, Jos. Sealy, Sr., Ephraim Mikell, Paul Grimball, Jos. Sealy, Jr., Jno. Wells, William Elliott, Sr., Jno. Sheppard and Samuel Screven, to hold the property for the support of an Antepordo Baptist Minister on that Island forever,) Mr. Jos. Sealy also gave a fund of l1000 for the same objects, but many of the members, soon moved away, some to Port Royal Island and some to Euhaw; those on Port Royal soon joined their brethren at Euhaw, where they maintained worship as well as they could after the death of Mr. Tilly; the survivors on Edisto also went to Euthaw and left the Baptist name almost extinct on Edisto for more than half a century."
Ephraim Mikell of Port Royal, Granville Parish Province of S.C. in his will of Sept. 2, 1743, also devised l100 to "the Baptist Meeting on Edisto Island."

FIRST GENERATION
The first of the family found in South Carolina was Ephriam Mikell, the name is spelled in the older records, Mikel, Mickel, Michel, but the form most used is Mikell of South Carolina
The name of Michel will be found in two places on the map dated 1715, in the first volume of the history of South Carolina by General McCrady, one of North Edisto River and one on South Edisto; and Ephriam Mikell was appointed tax collector for Edisto Island in 1715. (St. at large Vol. 6), this shows them to have been established on Edisto Island for some time
EPHRAIM MIKELL, SR., died Feb 14, 1728-9, (Probt. Court Book 1729-31, p. 135) His will dated Feb. 12, 1728-9 and proved May 3, 1729 (1727-29, p. 320), leaves his property as follows:
"Son Ephraim Mikell l5.
"Grand-son Jno. Mikell, Mustee boy James
"To Antepedo Baptist minister, if living on Edisto Island or if no one residing there to the Antepedo Baptist minister in Charlestown l100 current money. That is to say the use of it to be paid to the sd. Minister forever each year as the same become due. "I will that my Indian wench Jenny be given her freedom and five shillings each year. "6 negroes to be sold, with all goods and chattles to pay debts, and after debts are paid the remainder to be put at interest to the equally divided amongst my grandchildren now living, John Mikell, Joseph Mikell, Michael Mikell, Benjamin Mikell at the time of each arriving at the age of 21 years. "Grandson Joseph and his lawfull heirs all my lands, Plantations and buildings but if no said heirs or not arriving at age of 21 then to devolve to Michael Mikell in manner aforesaid, and to the rest in succession. "I will that if an Antepedo Baptist Minister shall live be Edisto Island that he shall have full power and privilege to live in my house, and to have use of all my out houses and all my clear lands and timber until my grand son Joseph Mikell arrive at age, or his heirs. He died between Sept. 2, and Oct. 15, 1763; his will dated Sept. 2, 1743 and proved Oct. 13, 1743, mentions:

John Mikell, planter of Granville Co. (Ephriam 2, Ephriam 1) born 1718 and died between Dec 13, 1764 and March 15, 1765. He was apparently married only once, and his wife was Ann ....., the family tradition says Ann Fickling, but this has not yet been confirmed.
The names of John and Ann Mikell's children with the dates of birth are given in the Register of St. Helena Church, (Beaufort, SC), but there is no record of baptism, and after the birth date of one of them is written the word "Baptist"

Joseph Mikell (Ephraim 2, Ephraim 1) born in 1723. In 1747 Joseph Mikell and Mary his wife transfer some property (M. C. O. D. D. p. 79), (this deed is in such a mutilated condition that it is not best to handle it.) No further account of Joseph found on the records. The family tradition states that he married Mary Calder and two daughters, Ann, Mary and one son John Calder Mikell; but John Calder Mikell was born in 1781 and died 1836, this would seem to make him too late to be the son of Joseph, he may have been the grandson.
Benjamin Mikell (Ephraim 2, Ephraim 1), Born 1728, June 24, 1754 Benjamin Mikell and Rebeccah his wife of Granville County, convey to Thomas Drayton, 350 acres in Granville Co. off Yeuhaw Creek; sd. 350 acres granted to Ephraim Mikell, late of Granville Co., Sept 9, 1735. Recorded April 11, 1759.
No further record of Benjamin Mikell found.
There are several Mikell's yet unplaced, who are probably descendents of the above, Joseph and Benjamin.
There is a John Mikell, planter, of Craven County who was based, Aug 25, 1770, 100 acres on the Great Pee Dee River from John Still (M.C.D.R. No. 3-433) and April 26m 1774, John Mikell with Ann his wife sell these same 100 acres to Abel Kolph (R. No. 4-498 M.C.O.)
Enoch James to John Mikell, both of Craven County, 100 acres in Welch's tract on Pee Dee River, Aug 3, 1777. Recorded March 12, 1785. John Mikell Jr. a witness.
This John Mikell saw service in the Revolution, evidently had a son John and is occasionally to be found on jury lists, always in Cheraw district. John Mikell with his brother William and a sister Mary are mentioned in Gregg's history of the old Cheraws, and is evidently the John mentioned above.

The Hayne Rccord gives the death of an Ephraim Mikell, son of Ephraim aged 22 in 1765; and April 9, 1767 Mary Parmenter was appointed administratrix of the estate of Ephraim Mikell, valued at £ 159-7-0. This Ephrairn is yet unplaced.
A James Mikell. was granted a commission as Deputy Surveyor General in 1766, and May 16, 1772, John Mikell was granted administration to the estate of Jas. Mikell of David's parish; John McCall, Chas. McCall and Barnet Mikell being the appraisers. The inventory includes 1 surveyor's chain.

Ephraim Mikell was Justice of the Peace in Charles Town District for 1776. (So. Ca. and American General Gazette, May 8, 1776.

JOSIAH MIKELL, B. 1754 died Oct.14, 1803 (Courier Oct. 18, 1803). He left no will. Adminst. was granted to his estate to Margaret Mikell, widow, of Edisto Island, in 1804. A Josiah Mikell, probably his son, married Elizabeth Croskeys Murray and died about 1819; the family record compiled by Mr. T. W. Mikell states that Josiah Mikall had also daughters, Mary and Hannah, who were the first and second wives of their kinsman Robert McLeod.
FIFTH GENERATION
JOHN CALDER MIKELL, of James Island, b. 1781 and died Oct. 11 1836 aged 55 years, is buried on Edisto Island, and his tombstone states him to have been a native of Edisto Island. Thc family record, by Mr. T. W. Mikell, states he was the son of Joseph, of the 3d generation and his wife Mary Calder, but this hardly seems possible, as Joseph was born In 1723 and John Calder in 1781
John Calder married Margaret Ann --(the family record states she was the daughter of Sarah Mikell and Aeneas McLeod). John Calder Mikell died intestate, and administration was
granted to his widow Margaret Ann Mikell and her son Aeneas McLeod Mikell. She died in 1844 and her will mentions:

Will of Ephraim Mikell, of Edisto Island, dated Jan. 16,1838, and proved Feb. 15' 1838, mentions: "Wife Providence Mikell and son John Calder Mikell, plantation on which I now reside, together with 50 acres of tract of land called Red House durihg her life or widowhood, and on her, marraige or death to son John Calder Mikell. Wife during her widowhood carriage and horses, equal portion of stock of cattle and horses,mmules and sheep, also house on the Bay purchased from Mr. Chisolm.
"Son Jenkins and his heirs plantation called Peter's Point.
"Son William and his heirs, lands called Devants Crawfords and balance of Red House tract after deducting the 50 acres given John Calder Mikell.
"Son Ephraim Mikell land known as Caulders and adjacent tract purchased from Wm. Meggett.
"Grandson Ephriam Mikell, plantation on which my father resided, called Blue House, and 10 negroes (named). I gave to the father of Ephraim Mikell during his life as much of my property as I could afford to give to any one child, a part of which he has already inherited.
"Daughter Margaret $10,000.00 in lieu lands.
"Daughter Sarah $2,000.00 in addition to' $8,000.00 already given her.
"Daughter Eliza $2,000.00 Iti addition to $8,000.00 already given her.
"Daughter Mary plantation hought of Mrs. Elizabeth Mikell.
"Daughter Emma plantation bought of John A. Seabrook and $1,000.00, and difference in value of the two tracts.
"Son William House on the Bay.
"Son Edward sum of money equal to above.
"Wife Providence 25 negroes to dispose of as she thinks proper, and 15 more for life.
