Edward Percy Briggs, Sr.
1860-1912
Edward Percy Briggs, Sr. (my great grandfather) was born near Summerton, Clarendon County, South Carolina on December 4th, 1860. Including his half brother, Richard Ragin Briggs, Edward was the ninth son of Thomas Whitaker Briggs, Sr., and the eighth son of his mother (his father's second wife), Margaret Susan Spain.

On June 9th, 1900 the family was enumerated in the 1900 census. Edward is 39, and his wife "Nannie S" is 30. The census also shows that they've been married nine years and that Nannie has had five children, of which three are still living. Daughters Mary Richardson and Norvelle "Noddie" Richardson Briggs are six and three years old respectively. Son James "Tourie" Richardson Briggs is one year old. From their gravestones at St. Marks Church Cemetery, we know that the two children who did not survive to this point were: James Richardson Briggs (8/24/1892 - 12/6/1892, same name as his surviving brother) and "Little Ed" Briggs (10/23/1894 - 6/11/1896... I'm assuming he was to be Edward Percy Briggs, Jr.). Interestingly, as you can see from the census enumeration, the Briggs family had two servants living in the home with them, ages 12 and 10!

In the 1910 census, the family is living on Main Street in Summerton and the household is augmented with a servant and two boarders. Edward's occupation is listed as "farmer, general farm." My grandmother Mary is now 17 years of age.

* Note: I'm not sure if the first picture is of Nannie Richardson. The one taken on the front porch is correct. Also not too sure if I'm correct on photo of EP Briggs. Please let me know if I'm in error.
