David Cathcart
1790-1862

David Cathcart was the youngest son of John Cathcart (of the Big 4).  He was born on board a ship four days out of County Antrim, which was taking David and his family to the United States. The family landed in Charleston, South Carolina and immediately headed to the Chester County area.

David first married Nancy Miller (1796-1831), in about 1823—probably in South Carolina.  They had three daughters:

  1. Mary W Cathcart (2/24/1824—5/1/1905)
  2. Margaret "Peggy" Cathcart (9/20/1826—12/11/1905)
  3. Nancy McCreight Cathcart (5/16/1830—3/1/1892)

Nancy died on 12 September 1831 near Selma, Alabama.

About a year after Nancy's death, David married Nancy's sisters daughter (i.e. his niece), Mary Junkin.  David and Mary have the following children:

  1. Elizabeth Jane Cathcart (3/31/1834—1/7/1921)
  2. John Hemphill Cathcart (8/7/1835—9/28/1879)
  3. Margaret Julanna Cathcart (12/26/1836—11/28/1917)
  4. David Junkin Cathcart (8/23/1838—3/1901)
  5. Samuel Pressley Cathcart (7/4/1840—7/31/1925)
  6. James Miller Cathcart (12/18/1842—2/11/1843)
  7. William Turner Cathcart (12/29/1844—12/23/1912)
  8. Catherine Lucinda Cathcart(9/26/1846—10/8/1886)
  9. Levi Byors Cathcart (9/9/1848—4/6/1852)

After spending his childhood in South Carolina, David and family moved from South Carolina to near Macon, Georgia (where he stayed only one year) finally settling in Dallas County, Alabama.  In about 1837-1839 (reportedly due to his—and/or his church's—opposition to slavery), David leaves Alabama and moves to Monroe County, Indiana (near Bloomington).

David Cathcart died in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana on Mary 15, 1862.

  1. Amongst the paperwork of Malcolm Luther McQuiston was found a photo album several photos and a list of birth and death dates in two pages. It appears that many of the notes and transcriptions were done by Margaret Julanna Cathcart, Malcolm's wife.
