William Lawton died on Edisto Island between October 9 and October 15, 1757.  (My information is that he was the first Lawton to come to this country.)  He was sometimes spoken of as Capt. William Lawton.  It is not known where or how he became known as "Captain."  William Lawton married first Mary Clarke, daughter of Jeremiah Clarke -- left 4 children, 2 married and left descendants.  We do not descend from them.

William Lawton married second about 1743-4 a daughter of Thomas Winborn, whose will (dated April 14, 1753 and proved January 23, 1756) denoted him as a planter of "Wadmalah Island, St. John's Parish, Colleton County."  By his second marriage he had two children:

1.  Winborn Lawton, born on Edisto in 1745, died on James Island on September 22, 1809.  He married a daughter of Jonathan Frampton, the widow Mary Mathewes (born August 22, 1749; died Feb. 10, 1839) who had one son, William Mathewes by her first marriage.  Winborn Lawton and his second wife, Mary Mathewes (née Frampton) had 3 children: Winborn Lawton, Jr. born 1782, died March 24, 1861; Beulah Lawton, who married John Hughes January 29, 1801; and William Lawton.

2.  Mary Lawton apparently died young and unmarried.

William Lawton married third, Mary Grimball, widow of Paul Grimball.  They had one child, Joseph Lawton, born Edisto Island, October 18, 1753, died March 5, 1815 at his Mulberry Grove Plantation on Blackswamp, near Robertville, St. Peter's Parish, Beaufort District to which he had moved about 1775.

Winborn Lawton, Jr. married second Martha Waring Hughes.  They had three children.

1.  Winborn Wallace Lawton married Cecelia Lawton.  They had several children, but only one, St. John Alison Lawton, grew to maturity.  He married Ruth Jennings of Virginia, they had no children.

2.  Josiah Powell Lawton married Ellen Lawton.  They had four daughters and one son, Powell Jr.  All of these married (except eldest daughter) and had children. Powell Jr. married Sarah Alston of Atlanta and they had one son, Powell III who married up North. I don't know the girl's maiden name. They have two girls and one boy about 8 or 9. He is the last hope of the Lawton name since Sumter is out.

3.  Maria Julia Lawton who married Asa Waring Lawton.  I believe they had several children but do not know anything about them.  (all three of the children of the Lawton Hughes marriage married Lawtons.

Winborn Lawton, Jr. and his first wife, Margaret McLeod nee Frampton (his cousin) had a large family among whom were my grandmother Susan Lawton.  Married William W. McLeod - my grandfather; also James M. Lawton who was married 3 times:
first Martha McLeod -- no children (my grandfather's sister)
second _____? [Arabella] Rivers
third Sarah Rivers sister of no. 2 was your grandmother.  (You know from here on).
