Notes and Interpretations (click here for legend)
Although Brian Russell’s surname is not Cathcart, his Y-111 test places him clearly within the Ulster/Scottish Cathcart founder cluster (R-M269). A detailed STR comparison shows:
1/111 genetic distance from Charles Cathcart (Samuel/Spartanburg line)
1/111 genetic distance from Richard Douglas Cathcart (William & Mary line)
3/111 distance from Barrie Cathcart (Kells/Connor → Australia)
3/111 distance from Buddy Cathcart and Ryan P. Cathcart (Joseph the Spy line)
A GD of 1/111 is exceptionally close and strongly suggests that Brian and those Cathcart testers share a paternal ancestor within the last 200–300 years (possibly sooner). In contrast, a GD of 3/111 is consistent with a much earlier branching, typically in the 1600s–early 1700s.
Brian’s STR pattern matches the modal values of the William & Mary Cathcart subgroup (Lanarkshire → York County, SC), especially at DYS439, DYS460, CDY, DYS534, DYS710, and related multi-copy markers. His profile does not match the distinctive Kells/Connor signature seen in Group 1g—even though both he and Barrie now live in Australia.
This means that Brian’s paternal line and Barrie’s paternal line arrived in Australia independently, from two different branches of the broader Ulster Cathcart family.
Conclusion:
Brian Russell belongs in
Subgroup 1d — William & Mary Cathcart, or a closely related
sister branch. His placement strengthens the overall structure of the
Ulster/Scotland Cathcart cluster and helps clarify branching within
Group 1.
