James Monro Cathcart, Sr.
born c.1829 - died 1900-1910

This group (which for the moment has James as its progenitor) includes a yDNA match (-4 and -3 on the 67- and 37-marker tests ) to my own line indicating that we are "related."  The degree of that connection is to be determined.

James was born about 1829 in South Carolina.  Some online family trees indicate that James was the son of James and Esther [Pruitt] Cathcart—which would certainly make them part of the Spartanburg Cathcart family, which has Samuel Cathcart as its head. I have not yet connected James to this family, but it's certainly possible.

1850 James Cathcart
1850 census: Spartanburg County, South Carolina

The above census enumeration for James and Esther [Pruitt] Cathcartincludes an 18-year-old

1860 census Samuel Cathcart
1860 census Georgia militia district 856, Cass County, Georgia

This 1860 census listing is perhaps most interesting and germane to James Monroe Cathcarts  past for two reasons.   First is the rather unusual first name of his wife, Parthena.  Second, the three children John Jane and Mary appeared to be the same three children—along with their mother Parthenia—10 years later in the 1870 census.  However, the head of household is no longer Samuel, but rather James Cathcart.

Some researchers have suggested that this is because the head of household  is James Samuel or Samuel James Cathcart.  For the moment, I'm not convinced that this is the case.  In order for this to be considered James Monroe Cathcart, perhaps we must assume that Samuel has either died or moved on, and that James (perhaps a brother) has married Parthenia and adopted her children into the family.  More research is needed.

Notes from my online page (more details to follow!):

  1. I initially added this family when I found George Hume Cathcart, Jr. (part of my line, descending from Samuel Cathcart—a "Big 4" brother) also being in this county in Texas.
  2. For more information about the location of these census enumerations, see my Georgia page—many of the County names/countries have changed, and some, like Cass County, no longer exist.
  3. See Samuel Y. and Parthenia of Spartanburg Co., SC. Note the name Parthenia. 1850 census has Parthena Newman age 18. Next to Shands.

Betty Cathcart email:
James and family settled in Bosque Co TX between 1874 and 1877, after 1880 moved to neighboring Comanche County. According to the family, James went to Tahoka TX to visit his daughter Mattie Henry, died and was buried there. They thought this occurred about 1900-1910. Susan J. is buried in Proctor Cemetery, Comanche Co TX. Her tombstone reads
born 10 Jan 1841, died 7 Aug 1904.
Federal Census 1910 Uinta Co WY : Cathcart, Henry M 32 TX SC GA Coal Miner
He is not married. This is the only additional record I have of Henry.
