Land Records

My Cathcart ancestors initially settled in the eastern portion of Chester County in 1816, before moving further s(15/31) James D 44, RJ 43, Tannerouth to Fairfield County in the area around Winnsboro.  There were clearly other Cathcarts already established in the area before the arrival of my direct line. The chart below outlines various land transactions in Chester County involving Cathcart—or other derivations—in the area.

Establishing the exact location of these parcels of land is made more difficult by the changing boundaries between districts and counties in South Carolina over time.  See the main South Carolina page for a list of maps depicting these boundaries.

Notes are listed for each transaction, and a transcription and/or original digital photos are available by clicking  on the "type document" in the column on the far right below.

Notes

  1. Samuel, is mentioned as a "yeoman of Kentuckey" [sic].  No idea how this Samuel may fit into any Cathcart line.
    1. In this case I take yeoman to mean a free man owning his own small, non-slaveholding farm.
  2. Very likely this is Joseph the revolutionary spy.  James McCammon (mentioned above) witnesses the indenture.
  3. David
  4. probably a spelling alternative for Cathcart—and same David as above
  5. John Jos
  6.  j
  7. This sale appears intended to cover another loan/note initially created in October of 1806.  The wagon and furniture sold are intended as surety for the prior—and yet unpaid—loan.
  8. This transaction mentions that the land in question boarders land owned by John Culp.  see link above for more details—and especially with respect to the other witnesses to the transaction... all Cathcarts.
  9. Bill of sale mentions that Joseph and Susannah are "now of the District of York."
